Joshua Cole teaches courses on modern Europe, specializing in the social and cultural history of France since the Revolution of 1789. He is the author of The Power of Large Numbers: Population, Politics, and Gender in Nineteenth-Century France (Cornell University Press, 2000). Cole has published articles in French Historical Studies, The Journal of European Studies, The Journal of Family History, The History of the Human Sciences, and The European Journal of Population, and co-authored chapters in a recent study of civilian populations during the First World War (Jay Winter and Jean-Louis Robert, eds., Capital Cities at War: London, Paris, Berlin, 1914-1919, Cambridge University Press, 1997).
