Dr. Alexander Petri has been the German Consul General in Chicago since November 2001. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Petri held various governmental positions at several German embassies throughout the world. In the 1980s, he was the Counselor for Cultural Affairs in Mexico City and then the Counselor for Economic Affairs in Stockholm. In Pretoria, he worked as the Deputy Head of Mission (1992-97). From 1988-1992, Dr. Petri was the Head of the Unit for Nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Foreign Office’s Bureau for Export Controls and later, before arriving in Chicago, the Director for Export Controls (1997-2001). He studied at the University of Delhi, India and at the University of Tübingen, Germany, where he received his PhD in International Law in 1970. Dr. Petri’s interests include modern literature and art in addition to politics and contemporary history. As the Consul General, he hopes to strengthen political, cultural, and economic relations between Germany and the American Midwest.
